A Comprehensive Model of Tertiary-storage Jukeboxes
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents an analytical hardware model for tertiary-storage jukeboxes. A jukebox can store large amounts of data in a cost-effective way, which makes it eminently suitable for applications that handle large amounts of continuous-media files, large databases and backups. However, to use a jukebox effectively it is important to schedule the jukebox resources. In order to build accurate schedules we need good predictions of the jukebox performance, which are provided by the hardware model. We also use this model to simulate jukeboxes.

Principles of Optimally Placing Data in Tertiary Storage Libraries
Recently, technological advances have resulted in the wide availability of commercial products offering near-line, robot-based, tertiary storage libraries. Thus, such libraries have become a crucial component of modern largescale storage servers, given the very large storage requirements of modern applications. Although the subject of optimal data placement (ODP) strategies has received conside...
متن کاملChallenges for Tertiary Storage in Multimedia Servers
The low cost per megabyte of optical disk and magnetic tape storage make these technologies particularly attractive for use in large capacity storage servers, including multimedia servers. However, these devices have performance problems that range from high costs for many optical drives to low performance and lack of random access in tape drives. We evaluate the performance on multimedia appli...
متن کاملStorage Systems for Movies-on-Demand Video Servers
1 Abstract In this paper, we evaluate storage system alternatives for movies-on-demand video servers. We begin by characterizing the movies-on-demand workload. Then we study disk farms in which one movie is stored per disk. This is a simple scheme, but it wastes substantial disk bandwidth, since disks holding less popular movies are under-utilized; also, good performance requires that movies be...
متن کاملHighLight: Using a Log-structured File System for Tertiary Storage Management
Log-structured file systems (LFSs) were developed to eliminate latencies involved in accessing disk devices, but their sequential write patterns also match well with tertiary storage characteristics. Unfortunately, existing versions only manage memory caches and disks, and do not support a broader storage hierarchy. Robotic storage devices offer huge storage capacity at a low cost per byte, but...
متن کاملScalable Services for Video-on-demand
Video-on-demand (VOD) refers to video services in which users can request any video program from a server at any time. VOD has important applications in entertainment, education, information, and adverstising, such as movie-on-demand, distance learning, home shopping, interactive news, etc. In order to provide VOD services accommodating a large number of video titles and concurrent users, a VOD...
